I went on the Caucasus trip to Georgia and Armenia with TUD. It was my first time travelling in a group, but in the end I was glad I did so. The trip itinerary was comprehensive, diverse and gave me a good insight into the region as a whole. and we did a lot in just 12 days.

Day 1: Batumi - Georgia's Riviera

We start the day with a cross country train ride to the seaside town of Batumi.

Embrace the vibrant allure of Batumi, Georgia's coastal gem. Stroll along the enchanting Batumi Boulevard, where the Black Sea whispers against the shore. Marvel at modern architecture, indulge in local cuisine at lively markets, and discover a dynamic blend of culture and nature in this captivating seaside haven. Your adventure in Batumi awaits!

Day 2: A new day, a new region

We head East by train to the Imereti region, a region known for its rolling mountains, lush valleys, and fertile plains. We will spend a few hours in Kutaisi, one of the world's oldest continuosly inhabited cities, and marvel at the city's beautiful medieval architecture.

Day 2: Urban Exploration

Embark on a thrilling journey in Chiatura, a mesmerizing town that echoes with the remnants of its Soviet-era industrial glory. Dive into the heart of adventure as you traverse one of the world's extensive cable car system, revealing panoramic vistas of rugged hills and forgotten mining sites. Wander through Chiatura's streets, adorned with abandoned buildings and industrial relics, unlocking the secrets of a bygone era.

Days 2-4: Live like a local

The Machitadze family extends a heartfelt welcome to you at their charming homestead. Immerse yourself in the charm of Baghdati, a delightful town cradled in the verdant valleys of the Imereti region. Amidst the serene landscapes, you'll discover the essence of rural life, surrounded by tranquility and captivating scenery.

The Machitadze, a family of vineyard owners, are proud stewards of a longstanding winemaking tradition. Learn more about traditional Georgian wine-making, which this region is renowned for.

Day 5: Welcome to the mountains

We start the day with a drive from Tbilisi to Kazbegi, a region steeped in history and renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, dramatic mountain peaks, and lush valleys.

We will visit some centuries-old religious edifices and forts, such as the Ananuri Fortress and Gergeti Trinity Church, as well as the more recently-built Russian-Georgia Friendship Monument.


Conclude the day with a refreshing hike around the Gveleti Waterfall.

Day 6: Lakes & Castles

Our day commences with exploring the Jvari Pass Travertine Natural Monument, a beautiful limestone formation that is a spectacular array of broad fields of travertine, which are awe-inspiring in their rugged beauty.

We will then explore the Zhinvali Lake, and visit the Sno Castle, before taking a late afternoon train to Tbilissi, the Georgian capital.

Day 7: The Capital

Discover Tbilisi, the Georgian captial, where ancient charm meets modern vibrancy. Wander through cobblestone streets in the Old Town, marvel at the iconic Bridge of Peace, and indulge in the tradition of sulfur baths. From historic Narikala Fortress to the lively Freedom Square, Tbilisi beckons with enchanting landmarks and captivating stories.

Night 7: Travel like a local

After exploring Tbilisi, we will head to Yerevan, Armenia, by train.

Spend a day and night on board a sleeper train that will whisk you across the country’s vast farmlands and deserts. Travelling on platskart class (6 bunk beds a compartment) is an experience in itself, where you get to be up close with citizens from all walks of life, such as cross-country traders, farmers visiting a neighbouring village for a wedding ceremony, students returning home for the semester, and hawkers peddling their goods on board.

Day 8: Yerevan calls

Rise and shine aboard the overnight Tbilisi - Yerevan train. The train pulls into Yerevan Station at the crack of dawn.

Discover Yerevan's vibrant charm! Immerse yourself in its rich history, savor local flavors at lively markets, and stroll through picturesque streets. The often overlooked and under-rated Armenian capital calls!

Day & Night 9: Tent Tales in Old Khot

After enjoying the turquoise waters of Sevan Lake, and visiting the famed Sevanavak Chruch, we venture to the abandoned village of Old Khot, pitching a tent for the night. Nestled in Vorotan Gorge, Old Khot resembles Machu Picchu, featuring thousand-year-old houses built in caves and emerging from rocks.

Day 10 - 11 : Byurakan, where history & nature collide

Travel westwards across the breadth of the country and stop at the famed Tatev Monestary along the way.

Immerse yourself in rural Armenian life and experience the charm of village life in Byurakan. Visit the abandoned ROT-54 Soviet Space observatory, hike around the tranquil Kari Lake, and explore the 7th century Amberd Fortress with its 11th century bathhouse.

Day 12 : Congrats, you're now a story teller!

 Following a satisfying breakfast at the homestay, our journey concludes in Yerevan. Throughout the trip, you've absorbed the rich experiences and discoveries of the Caucasus, fostering enduring connections with fellow travelers and leaders. As you head home, you become a storyteller, eagerly sharing the memories of this remarkable journey with loved ones and anyone eager to listen.
